FATAL: kernel too old after running pacman -Syu

Postby kitenski » Fri Aug 19, 2016 12:04 pm

I just tried to update my system running the pacman -Syu command.

checking back through the screen I see numerous similiar errors:
( 3/66) upgrading glibc [######################] 100%
warning: /etc/locale.gen installed as /etc/locale.gen.pacnew
FATAL: kernel too old
error: command failed to execute correctly
%
(14/66) upgrading dash [######################] 100%
FATAL: kernel too old
error: command failed to execute correctly

I am now back at a command prompt as root, but many commands are not working,
[root@alarm ~]# ls

FATAL: kernel too old
Please can someone suggest how I can get this resolved? I've not rebooted or logged out for fear of making it worse.

This is all installed onto a USB stick so I can unplug that and plug it into my desktop system which is running Ubuntu if I can then copy some files over to fix it?

As you can guess I am fairly inexperienced with Linux.

regards,
Greg

I ended up plugging the USB into my desktop, copying over the data files and re-installing from scratch.

no commands at all would work to detail current kernel etc.

It's a pink/grey Pogoplug so this spec https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv ... 2-pinkgray

$ pacman -Q | grep linux

linux-firmware 20160730.6bc2c60-1
linux-kirkwood 4.4.18-1
util-linux 2.28.1-1

On mine, the board is TonidoPlug 2. Since Pacman -Syu did not update the kernel, I assume the kernel was the current kirkwood one.

I would check. I assume that hitting this message, you were still using the original ARMv5 "linux" which hasn't seen a bump in a very long time, instead of linux-kirkwood.

I think that was my issues, I wasn't using kirkwood.

For future reference can I "stick" to the kirkwood distro now and pacman -Syu will keep things up to date???
