User interface 'hangs' every few seconds.

I installed arch on a Raspberry pi 3 yesterday using ArchLinuxARM-rpi-2-latest.tar.gz and installed XFCE as the desktop environment.

I've noticed while running that the user interface will kind of 'hang' every few seconds. The kind of thing i'm talking about would be like scrolling the mouse wheel 180 degrees or more while browsing a web site and having the page actually scroll about 4 or 5 seconds later. Another example would be trying to type something in a text box and have the cursor freeze in place for a few seconds before finally completing a word. I've even noticed this kind of behavior in a terminal window command line.

Windows too will sometimes take a long time to load up. Whenever it happens it seems to lock up the entire interface for the duration of the glitch. You can't move windows around and you can't start or close any apps.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?
