Arch on Raspberry Pi 3B+ as media player

Postby snack » Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:34 pm

Hi, I'm an x86 Arch user since long time. I need to build a cheap media player for playing movies on my TV, and I'm thinking about buying a Raspberry Pi 3B+ for this purpose; obviously I'd like to put Arch on it. Since I have no experience with ARM I really don't know if my plan would work so I'd need some advice. In particular:
1) is the 3B+ powerful enough to play 1080p movies from an SD or an external USB HDD?
2) would there be any problem with Arch on it (eg. crappy video drivers etc.)?
3) is there any major difference between Arch x86 and Arch ARM that would make what I want to do difficult/impossible?
Thanks.

1) Use kodi? Just no HEVC content as there is not hardware decoding support.
2) No problems (video drivers are video drivers... why would Arch be any different from any other distro)?
3) No.
