Authentication Failure / can't log in error

Postby moe » Thu Jul 04, 2019 6:05 pm

I have been attempting to get HDMI video out working under archlinuxARM on the orange pi prime. Previously I have created a working bootable image for this board by replacing the root filesystem (excluding /boot) of an existing image for this board. I don't recall the source for which image I used for the working headless installation.

It appears that a lot of things are defined in /boot including the parameters for video output. So I took the desktop armbian image for this board & replaced the rootfs with archlinuxARM.

The board boots, loads the kernel, gets all the way to the login prompt; yet won't let me log in either as alarm or as root due to `Authentication failure`

When I try to ssh to the board, I get `connection refused`

I have so far tried the following:

* chrooting into the image to reset the password (from same architecture arch arm host)
* chown 1000:1000 /home/alarm (& checked some other permissions)
* removed the passwords for root and alarm
* remaking the image in various ways

still `Authentication failure` persists. If I put the wrong password it just says `login incorrect` so I know it's not that.

If you would like to have a look at the images in question; here is the working headless / server image for this board:

https://github.com/0pcom/skyalarm-old/releases/download/ArchPrimeH5/ArchPrimeH5.img.tar.xz

and here is the desktop image with video enabled which exhibits `authentication failure` error:

it is not very helpfull, but i have seen this also with the latest build for armv7 allwinner, and am unable to log in as well. I can try in the future to check the serial console to see if i can login that way and see what is going on there.

i was able to get a serial connected, see attached log.

my guess its related to the hardware entropy deamon error, i also see the the crng is very late in the startup process.

This would make the crypto functions fail in case no entropy can be provided.

I will try to figure out if i can get my hands on the systemd logs from the sd card on via pc.

i tried the following:

replaced havaged with rng-tools and started that.
masked the systemd-logind.
updated the system.

None seem to work. Even serial login does not work.

i recreate the arm file according to https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv ... uxino-lime today.

Please note you have to become root for the bsdtar command, via su. Otherwise some files fail to set the correct capability, i guess this could be related to the issue for login.

I only changed the wget http://os.archlinuxarm.org/os/sunxi/boo ... th-spl.bin part with my own uboot made for the inet1 platform.

I also used a 16GB sd card instead of the 32Gb i used first. Or the image has been update with a fix.

I just wanted to let you know it works now for me.

Even I am having the same issue. I build and img for banana Pi R2 using the manjaro-arm-tools as they dropped armv7 support.

I am able to boot but not able to login from hdmi(tty1) nor from UART(tty0).

Login service fails to load.
Here is the boot log > https://pastebin.com/3fyHPBdB

I think this was because of the ext4 rootfs mounted on read only mode.
