Default space for /boot

Postby Silhouette » Tue Aug 11, 2020 3:00 pm

Hello,

I'm having issues of /boot being too small on a system installed 1.5 years ago (running on a raspberry pi) following the website's tutorial. I did not manually modify mkinitpcio's config. As of today, the install tutorial on archlinuxarm.org still indicates to create a 100M partition. The archlinux wiki suggests using a size of at least 200 MiB for the boot partition.
May I suggest modifying the tutorial to use a bigger size for the boot partition?

(btw, I temporarily fixed the problem by using xz compression instead of gzip, but that's not what I want to discuss here)

x86 has different requirements. You don't need more than 100MB
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '#Newly untarred rootfs
[oleg@RPi4 temp]$ du -sh ./boot/
39M ./boot/

#aarch64 rootfs Raspberry Pi4
[oleg@RPi4 temp]$ du -sh /boot/
40M /boot/')

But I do have more than this, even though I did not try to modify anything bootloader-related. Is it an issue on my side? I have files from both raspberrypi-bootloader and uboot-raspberrypi, is it redundant?

I can confirm that the default space for boot needs updating, at least for the mainline kernel + U-boot image. Just doing a fresh setup on a Raspberry Pi 3B and if using mainline kernel + U-boot 100MB is insufficient space.

I ended up using 150MB instead, but 200 as the main Arch wiki suggests seems safe.

Can't see how to suggest an update to the install instructions, is there a wiki-style editor or something?

Yeah, I can see that now. It's U-Boot + initramfs + initramfs-fallback that add to the used space
