ddclient.pid missing

I'm having problems with ddclient. Here is my ddclient.conf file...

protocol=freedns
ssl=yes

server=freedns.afraid.org
login=myusername
password=mypass
mysubdomain')

I ran sudo systemctl start ddclient and I got the following error message...

The command failed so I ran sudo systemctl status ddclient.service and got this

I checked /var/run/ and I did not see a ddclient.pid file. Where does this file come from? I reinstalled ddclient and I didn't see any installation errors. If I run sudo touch /var/run/ddclient.pid I just get the same error and the ddclient.pid file is removed.
