"Pre-Configured" FTP or Add-on FTP (Like VSFTPD)?

Postby steadybright » Thu Oct 03, 2013 7:43 pm

All,

I'm trying to decide about FTP access for my Pogoplug V2.

I currently use whatever FTP is preconfigured during the ALARM setup.

I say preconfigured because I didn't have to set it up. The first time I logged in on SSH, immediately following the ALARM install, my SSH client (Bitvise) opened an FTP session as well.

1. Is this pre-configured FTP capability something that's built into SSH?
2. Is there a compelling reason (like security and/or performance) to use something like VSFTPD instead of the pre-configured FTP?

FTP is not enabled by default.

What you are using is SCP (secure copy over SSH). If its working for you I wouldn't recommend changing it.

sftp

It is a sublayer of the SSH protocol.

Do I gain anything by switching from SFTP (via SSH) to VSFTPD (or similar FTP package)?

Nada, except less security.
