Safest way to poweroff Dockstar

Postby tedm » Thu Feb 13, 2014 3:01 pm

On another thread, I was having DHCP issues on certain subnets, (thanks WarheadSE), but didn't get it fully resolved but have some ideas now.

So I resinstalled arch on the pogo seagate dockstar, the u-boot code appeared intact, but I updated it anyways. For the install, same as on the instructions page, but I did add a -j for journal support on the 16gb sd stick.

I did a pacman Syu, made users, installed and setup samba, nginx, and php.

What I used to do was, as root, just poweroff, and in a minute unplug the unit when moving it.

When restarting it, just plug a cable in it, and insert the power plug, and in a minute or two, arp it, or check the dhcp server for it's address, this always worked on my 192.168.x.x subnets.

On another network with 10.0.x.x IP dhcp scopes there were issues getting an IP. I now think the issue may be with some of the apps I load that are expecting, or after installing and configuring on 192.x, their config files are expecting 192.x and may be interfering with the dhcp client process on the server.

So next tests will be to disable auto starting of samba and nginx, and php, and only start them after the pogo as acquired a dhcp lease.

I know how to do the above testing, but I'm not sure if the #poweroff, wait a minute, then unplug, is the safest way to poweroff.

Do others who move their devices around have any tricks, such as unmounting the usb first?
