Noobie with pogoplug issues

Postby toofewacres » Sun Mar 23, 2014 8:36 pm

Hi,

I'm a linux noobie. I just retired my Pink v2 pogoplug and thought I might try to re-purpose it as torrent and music server.

I followed the directions to load archlinux on to it. First thing was that I needed to allow SSH which I did. The pogoplug page asked to set a password for access which I did (in hindsight, this caused my issue). Went thru the steps using putty (using the new password) and got Archlinux onto the usb stick, etc and everything installed just fine. Rebooted the pogoplug and it started back up fine. But now I login under root, I have to use the "new password" to login. This puts me at a prompt ending with a $ (Pogoplug:~$) . I had figured I would add new users and not run only as root, but this appears to put me on with no rights to do anything....

I did some poking around and found a post to make a bootable usb version of ArchLInux (viewtopic.php?f=53&t=3312&start=10). Which does allow me to boot up my pogoplug with the usb and then login as root,root with the proper prompt (root@alarm ~]# )

But now, how do I fix things so that I have the proper login with booting to the USB... Like I said, i'm a Linux noobie, so I need some hand holding...

Thanks in advanced

Well, this is the stock firmware
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Pogoplug:~$')

This is ALARM proper
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@alarm ~]#')

At this point please search the googles : "how to add user to linux", or even check the Arch Linux wiki @ https://wiki.archlinux.org

toofewacres: of course, WarheadsSE is correct about those prompts, but if / when alarm (arch linux for arm) does get installed properly, the default pw for it will be root which you can (and should) change immediately with #passwd

However, if you're not getting the alarm# prompt, but the pogoplug$ prompt, you are logging into the uboot shell, and alarm isn't running.

Something has changed recently that may be affecting all new v5 installs, it could be as simple as directory names in the instructions. But I don't think you're doing anything wrong here, at this point. If you followed the instructions to a T, you should have rebooted and had to enter "root" for the first ssh pw, and then gotten to alarm# and been in archlinuxarm.

Hopefully things will be resolved soon.

The stock prompt. Not the u-boot shell.

Figured out my issue... Had a bad flash drive that won't boot from (don't know why, but I won't be using it anymore). The new one I made boots fine. Everything works fine.

Now, on for some fun!

Thanks for your info and time.
