[Solved] GFH Bricked? Please help...

Postby hetfield » Mon May 19, 2014 10:45 am

Just broken my GFH which was happily running archlinux for several months after attempting 'pacman' issued through a PC with a faulty PSU... at the time of the update the GFH was directly connected to the router though... Anyways... the GFH didn't allow ssh anymore.... only showed a solid green light...

I researched the forums and learnt that solid green light shows that the gfh is booting and the kernel is loaded.

I then decided to try a bootable flash drive from scratch. So I used moonman's guide here!. Booting with this usb - the GFH still shows the solid green light... but ssh'ing from a virtual terminal window says unknown host alarm (just like before)...

On removing the flash drive & the hdd and trying to boot the gfh shows an orange blinking light.

Is it bricked? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is giving different output, no, it is not bricked. (different colored LEDs on different states means it is at least aware of those states)

Fair enough... Thanks for the post...

I've re-tried all steps of the "bootable usb making guide" referred in the OP - including making fresh ext3 fs on the drive - but still unable to ssh into the gfh... :(

I sometimes suspect - it's probably a messed up fstab entry (probably a typo somewhere) which I did when I was able to ssh last time it booted fine... But I'm assuming reinstalling from scratch i.e., unpacking the OS tarball - would have re-written the fstab anyway... any suggestions....

Yippeeee.... Marking it as Solved. Was just able to ssh.

I think the problem was either of these:

My LAN cable was slipping out of the socket on GFH. [I'm using a short 1ft cable crimped by myself, as the GFH happens to sit next to the router.]
Or I was continuedly forgetting to 'sudo su' each time i was uncompressing the tarball on the USB stick...
Thanks everyone who had a look at this thread.
