[ GoFlex Home Network ] How to setup a new HDD

Postby Rastikan » Tue Jun 17, 2014 12:13 am

HI there, I had a GoFlex Home Network 2TB unit. The unit was dropped on the floor and then had numerous bad sectors ( including numerous in the partition area ).

I purchased a new 3TB HDD, cracked the GoFlex Home Network case unit, put in the new HDD.

Then I guesses that it needed a specific partitioning scheme to be recognized by the stock / factory GoFlex stock software.
So Far I'm not sure I'm doing the right fdisk / parted commands so that:
#1, the disk appears fully ( the whole 3TB )
#2, the disk is recognized and usable by the GoFlex Home Network software.

Right now, I get error message from the Web UI that I cannot format the disk ( I believe it has to do with lack of memory, from the SSH I cannot usually format the disk NTFS unless I use another drive plugged in the USB port as swap partition/memory )

Anyhow, I'm not sure what partition scheme it is expecting. Old fashion MBR or GPT etc.

I've seen numerous threads and posts on putting back the stock firmware but none on hot to setup the so it works with the stock firmware. Anyone could describe what needs to be done?

TY

You don't need to go back to stock. I had 1TB which got replaced with 3TB. First Update your U-Boot by booting off of a flash drive. Then format it GPT. Without updating U-Boot you need hybrid MBR (which you probably don't want to mess with since there's u-boot that supports 3TB natively)

Hi moonman, thank you for your answer.

Let me just clarify a few things:

#1, the sole purpose of the unit is to provide me with a cheaper alternative to Apple's TimeCapsule.

#2, I did installed a lot of archlinux/pacman packages and almost had a NAS replicating my original GoFlex ( better of course since I could do such things as setting up my OWN device name etc ) got enough working that I could do an initial Time Machine backup, although I didn't have the 'mDNSResponder' service or whatever OSX needs to identify the machine, therefore I have to use hardcoded IP address.

#3, I really want an hassle free solution for backing up my machines. I don't care what software is used just want my backup to happen.

I'll try partitioning the drive with GPT and create a single 100% partition which I'll then format NTFS.

I've partitioned the drive I believe with GPT and a single large partition.
Formatted it NTFS, still the Seagate stock software (Web UI ) is not recognizing the drive. There must be something else that is needed to set the hdd properly to work with the stock GoFlex software.

Ok, I can't help you with stock as I never used it. Just a small tip: stock is linux too (way older though). NTFS is not native to linux. Heck, ext4 was probably not in the kernel yet. Ext3 is probably your best bet. If it doesn't work, then I don't know.

Hi Rastikan,

do you have a solution yet? I'm, working on the same problem. Upgrading my full 3TB GFH with a new 4TB seagate disk.
Web UI says always unable to format drive. although i have used parted, mke2fs and so on. I have no clue anymore.

Do you have?
