Thanks @moonman,

I think I started from that - but I've downloaded it anyway.

Problem I had is jumping from a 5.x.x kernel to 7.x.x is a big jump - the patches weren't applying, I checked most an not needed on the nsa325 box. I'll cross check.

Main problem is 7.x.x. is a big jump - oldconfig (where I started) is a a huge number of changes. So its changing a lot ...

Have too approaches for the bug:
Take the error message - work out what is causing in, then disable that code, hopefully through configure
Bisect the kernel versions and see where the error arose. Thas a bit painful - currently only doing compiles on the nsa325 box itself, my cross compiler isn't playing game right now ..
Yeah there would be a lot of changes, but defaults are usually sane.

I remember I used to compile on GoFlex Home as well then I used armv5 chroot on more powerful armv7 boards as well to compile faster.

Ah this seems a clue kworker/u4:1-btrfs-endio-meta - and as it was kworker that crashed - must be something in btrfs. Alas I use btrfs for my back up - so I need it. Still gives me something to focus on.

Yes good Idea - my beagle farm should be able to compile things for the the nsa325 - I think its something like twice as powerful ...

And digging more deeply - There are bugs showing up in many running process,

bash
systemd-journal
sh
fixdep
gcc
sudo
dmesg
systemd-udevd

So its something fundamental. Bug is always when calling smp_processor_id()

I may reach out to the kernel guys ...

Thats interesting - it can boot from USB .... last update didn't work. So am now on the UART.

Its failing to mount any modules, and that means not seeing the disks etc. And also shows initramfs are needed ... oops didn't take a copy of that.

I'll now try and rebuild the the bits on my PB ....

Oh yes - I think that doing anything produces a large number of BUGs :(

Ah ant thats a gotcha - you mave to make on initramfs on the machine its need for via mkinitcpio - so pulling the hard disk doesn't help - as mounting it on another machine you still can't make the initramfs - and that is needed for the machine to boot.

Sigh, does anyone have the latest install image on the nsa325? At lest then I can write it to a USB, boot via the USB, and then mount the correct disks, chroot and install a kernel image on the right hardware in the right disk ...

Hmm .. should have kept a copy myself. Maybe get my old machine from downstairs (now very slow) and find the copy on there. Ah easier - if I pull the backup disk - I can maybe fine it on there. Its only half of a btrfs file system - but can hopefully still mount it - as I think the small hdd only has copies of the files ...

And cross compiling on my PocketBeagle - and I've managed to get it installed and running. Network didn't come up - which is strange dhcp isn't working - but I can see it trying.

Now to get it to work in the makepkg - something in that script was messing up on install - I think it may be because I've now on for xz compression on both kernel and modules ...

When I get a reasonable selection of packages - I'll probably host on my own website for anyone else that wants to upgrade old NAS boxes ...
