It wont make any difference for you. The only difference is the kernel version.
Also even if you get apache going, it will be slow. You might want to consider lighttpd or nginx + php-fpm.
All the instructions are on the ArchWiki

is it easier to install? I never expected it to be a lightning server. just someplace to put/get stuff and maybe have a cool front-end

All the googling I did, I dont recall that one being mentioned

I saw several complete instructions for archlinux.
Everything would have went swimingly if the first instruction had mentioned the thumbdrive had to be 2gb or greater. it just saig I needed a thumbdrive and I thought 1gb was reasonable.
I spent hours trying to figure out why it would crash during install. I verified the drive several times so I lead myself to believe that the flash memory on the pogoplug was bad...

maybe I'll just start over. how far back do I need to go? all the may to the beginning I guess since I have no idea what's right and what isnt. I'm just afraid that the build would result in the same incomplete configuration and I'm back where I am now.

before I start my journey to reinstall, is there one or two things that might need to be changed in php.ini.default to make it work as php.ini besides just name change?

I did a quick scan because I know it probably has logging turned off, or even if it is on will tell me where its putting it.
and If I could figure out where http is logging or hw to turn it on I might be able to correct it before a reinstall.

Thanks for any pointers.
