[SOLVED} rpi zero edimax wifi

I'm trying to get my edimax wifi to work OK with rpi zero.

When I try to build 8192cu-dkms I see this message from dkms

==> No kernel * modules. You must install them to use DKMS!

whenever it tries to do stuff. I do seem to have modules so It is probably something generic about dkms I am missing.

Edit: Thought I had the kernel headers, but just had linux-api-headers.
