binutils ...... exists in the file system

I have just been trying to upgrade my Pi and when pacman tries to upgrade binutils it complains that it already exists in the file system. Usually errors like this point to a broken pacman. However, I have tried restoring a few previous system backups, which as far as I know are OK. So what do I need to do to diagnose the problem?
