Netgear WN111V2 USB Wifi Dongle Need help getting it working

Postby johnwilson1969 » Fri Mar 16, 2012 10:00 pm

Trying to get a Netgear WN111-V2 (AR9170) working on my pogoplug. I have lurked around various forum and have tried many different stabs in the dark. Most seem to recommend the carl9170 driver, but no CLUE where hot to get it going. (downloaded firmware, etc, etc, but really wasn't sure what I was doing.)

I noticed that even without 'carl' I do have the ar9170-1 and ar9170-2 firmware files in my /lib/firmware folder.

I have installed wireless_tools

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB-2.0 4-Port HUB
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0781:555f SanDisk Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0846:9001 NetGear, Inc. WN111(v2) RangeMax Next Wireless ')

ifconfig show no wlan device
iwconfig shows no wireless extensions.

What should I do next?

cat /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
#
# /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
#
blacklist ar9170usb

install linux-firmware
Now carl9170 will load after reboot
I can't help with rest, I use stick as access point

Thanks for the fast response.

Ok, blacklisted ar9170usb (but i don't think it was ever loading)

Installed linux-firmware

Made sure my carl9170-1.fw was in the /lib/firmware folder

but still no interface when i do iwconfig/ifconfig/ip link

here are the seemingly relevant dmesg messages:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[ 3.400000] usb 1-1.3: new high speed USB device using oxnas-ehci and address 4
[ 3.560000] usb 1-1.3: New USB device found, idVendor=0846, idProduct=9001
[ 3.570000] usb 1-1.3: New USB device strings: Mfr=16, Product=32, SerialNumber=48
[ 3.580000] usb 1-1.3: Product: USB2.0 WLAN
[ 3.580000] usb 1-1.3: Manufacturer: ATHER
[ 3.590000] usb 1-1.3: SerialNumber: 12345')

Optional more info....

This is a pink pogoplug (if that matters)

Basically I am trying to make an AP (among other things), but AD-HOC network would work as well. If you or anyone has any recommendations for a USB wifi adapter that might work better I am open to suggestions. The box will be running an application and would like to give the users wireless access instead of plugging in.

I have a realtek RL8187 at the office and might go and try it (but the according to the net, the linux driver doesnt support ad-hoc or master mode - and it didn't in ubuntu). I have a VERY old prism2 usb dongle. but It doesn't seem to load any modules for it either.

There is a module alias
alias usb:v0846p9001d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip* carl9170
carl9170 should have been default
Where did you get firmware? http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drive ... are_binary

This is quite old

I did get the carl firmware from linuxwireless.org

I am at a loss on how to properly set up an alias. I poke around in /sys/devices
there are 3 directories: platform, system and virtual. I noticed some modalias files in those subdirectories. But was at a loss for the proper way to create a new alias....

** EDIT - I found the kernel aliases in /lib/modules and added the appropriate alias - Didn't help :(

could it be my kernel?
2.6.31.6_SMP_820

I had previously read your post on creating an AP and reread it now, the package in reference:
pacman -U http://myplugbox.com/wireless/kernel/ke ... pkg.tar.xz

no longer resides on that server, searched for it via google, but no other copies could be found.

I did find some newer kernels on that site, and even attempted to install one on my test flash drive. But on reboot, I still had 2.6.31.6_SMP_820
Probably due to the fact that I am unsure what to do after installing the package. Tired looking for new files in the /boot directory and renaming them to the files with an older date... but to no avail.

Forget all that, carl9170 is for kernel 2.6.38 or later.
Your stuck with ar9170, and no access point, but ad hoc might work. Or wait till WH makes a new kernel

Thanks for all of your help, That is what I was afraid of...

Problem is that I never could get ar9170usb working either (as a client) to even see if adhoc would work.

also tried RTL8187 usb adapter to no avail, and ancient microsoft USB PRISM2 device.

Any recommendations of a chipset that will work with my current kernel?

EDIT: Well, my dongle was flaky, that could be the issue. the light stopped coming on, and stopped showing up in lsusb. Wiggled it around and would work - but makes me suspicious. I have another 2 coming on the way. another WN111V2 and one with the Ralink RT3070 (same chipset as the original pogoplug usb wifi adapter)
For now I am moving to a USB to Ethernet adapter and a mini-ap module for my wireless access. Seems a shame to do so (cost and size/complexity of this project), but I need to move forward. Will update my success/failure whenever I get the other modules in for my future reference and others.
