Easy WiFi USB adapter ?

Postby rjalex » Sun Oct 05, 2014 7:40 pm

Dear friends,
I'm giving up with this Edimax EW-7811Un wifi key. :(

Are there any 802.11n USB wifi sticks known to work out of the box for a newb like me ?

Thanks

Search for linux usb adapters. I don't know whats available anymore and usually latest ones don't have very good driver support. The latest i've tried was linksys ae1000 which worked excellent, and even worked in AP mode.

Your Edimax thang, have you run wifi-menu? It scans, connects and asks for key, and saves profile in /etc/netctl.
It couldn't/shouldn't be easier

Hi all and thanks for trying to help.

I am using the Edimax on an Archlinux version called Archphile (oriented towards playing music through USB DACs) and despite a long thread here and great support from Archphile's daddy till no it's a no go :-(

Did not try wifi-menu though and will.

If you care to read some background here's the thread explaining my woes.

To be honest, other things can get in the way of the Edimax working-
I see you have a DAC, does the rpi have enough juice to run both?
Does ifconfig -a show the device, connected or not? That would prove driver loaded ok.
Edimax may have used yet-another- Chinese manufacturer, so device ID is not in list, libusb-compat might help

pepedog thanks for caring :-)

Yes the RPi has enough juice with a stable 5v through a 2A custom power source and the DAC is powered by its own means, additionally the Edimax not working completely is tested with only the Edimax and a 32GB USB pendrive.

Hereunder are the steps I had written in the other thread which in my limited knowledge should indicate a driver has been loaded (but is it the right one ???) but as you see other than the wifi0 existing and can bring it up I cannot either scan nor associate ...

Thanks for any further help.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'root@archphile ~]# dmesg | grep usbcore -> 12.897157] usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8192cu (and no other reference to rtl8192cu in dmesg)

[root@archphile ~]# ip link -> 5: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000 link/ether 80:1f:02:f7:3a:71 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

[root@archphile ~]# ip link set wlan0 up -> 5: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000

[root@archphile ~]# iw dev wlan0 link
Not connected.

AND HERE is the step from the archlinux wiki where things start to go wrong:

[root@archphile ~]# iw dev wlan0 scan
command failed: No such device (-19)
')

I think you will have to try a proper Archlinuxarm install to rule things out.
wifi-menu requires dialog plus maybe other things.
Try without the dkms package first

I think this is a very good idea. Will try with a "vanilla" archlinux and will report the result.
Thanks a lot.
A presto.

PS YAY IT WORKS WELL !!!! Now I'll try to work out the diffs with Archphile !!!
