After latest update (15/07/2019) Rpi2 hangs on boot

Postby phovos » Thu Jul 18, 2019 5:42 pm

Hello,

As stated above my system hangs on boot.

https://images2.imgbox.com/b0/ad/cAhuyvUx_o.jpg
https://images2.imgbox.com/19/bc/CjQGKYJ8_o.jpg
https://images2.imgbox.com/41/92/MuSRb1Bx_o.jpg

cmdline.txt
config.txt

Please note that except for /boot, rest of partitions are on an USB hard drive that uses LVM.

Any help would be appreciated.

reverting back to the previous btrfs snapshoot incl. /boot restore solved my problem.
So no HW issue here, mine is a 3b+ with the rpi2 arch os.

Thanks for BTRFS snapshots !!!

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately I neglected to keep regular backups of /boot and I can't even locate the last one.

I guess I will have to wait a while for this to be resolved, install on a new SD while migrating old config and cmdline there and if everything works properly finally copy the /boot partition to my original installation. And of course make it so never to neglect taking proper backups again of every partition.

Unless one has a better idea of course. :)

Well, I've never tried on a rpi, but the general way would be:

- prepare a working image on another sdcard
- boot from this one
- mount/chroot into your hdd
- rollback the suspicious packages one by one, start with kernel, btrfs, firmware
- if you don't clean-up you find the old package versions in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
- don't forget to put the matching boot files to your 1st sdcard
- try to reboot from it
- loop over all suspicious packages ...

Thanks ufo6000, with your tips I was able to fix this issue.

I had to use this slightly older image: https://web.archive.org/web/20190425225 ... est.tar.gz
The newest one just gives an error when I tried to chroot.

After following the steps in the installation guide, I booted from the new sdcard and mounted both my HDD and original sd-card (with a USB adapter). Then I installed arch-install-scripts to get arch-chroot working, and downgraded the following packages:

firmware-raspberrypi
linux-firmware
linux-raspberrypi
raspberrypi-bootloader
raspberrypi-bootloader-x
raspberrypi-firmware

Not sure which one was causing the problem , but now everything works like it did before the update. Thanks again!

This is also being discussed on the RPi Linux Github site:

AFAIK the downstream dwc_otg driver isn't aware about CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y, so the fastest workaround would be a separate config for the Raspberry Pi 4 and rollback config for Rpi 2.

I had some time today to deal with this issue.

There was a workaround on the link that davep provided. Edited config.txt and added:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'gpu_mem=256')

Then I just downgraded to "linux-raspberrypi-4.19.57-1" and reverted to previous settings.

Thanks to everyone that contributed.

Thank for the infos phovos,

since I can live with gpu_mem=256 for the moment,
I set this in the config txt and upgraded my rpi3+ to all newest available packages :-)
