RPI4 oom killer crashes

Postby jaka87 » Sat Jul 24, 2021 2:32 pm

Hi.

I got Raspberry pi 4 with 8GB of ram. I use it as a TV setup. Noting fancy. Just default install with Kodi, transmission, sonarr, radarr...
I'm constantly getting oom-killer crashes.... The whole setup usually uses around 1GB of ram so im not sure how it could go out of memory?

Here is the sample log file https://pastebin.com/K02Yrfx2

I tried downgrading kernel and few other things but it didn't work... I search online and a lot of people complain about the similar issues with RPI4 on raspbian. They solve it with adding $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'a')rm_64bit=1
to $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '/')boot/config.txt
. i tried that but imy system didn't boot. I guess it has to do with 64bit kernel... From what i looked it seems to be complicated and experimental to use it on arch..

Any idea how to solve this issue ?

Not sure, search first then open an issue upstream against the kernel? https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues

Not really much help, but I can confirm this behavior on my rpi4 4GB, also using as a kodi mediacenter.
Think it started a couple of weeks ago, first I thought my sdcard or rpi were dying, now this seems to be a bug somewhere (maybe kodi issue).

I turned off all other services (transmission, sonarr, radarr, bazarr) and just run kodi and I still got crashes.
I downgraded kodi to 19.0 and will now try for a few days (so far so good). If everything will work i will then turn services back on for a few days.

It might really be kodi's fault even thou when checking the log almost always kodi is not the first reason for oom...

EDIT:
older version of kodi still crashed...im downgrading the kernel...

Is this armv7h or aarch64? You did not post a complete dmesg, just the part with the crash. Seems related to CEC?

Someone made a bugreport,
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/4474

I'm on 32bit armv7l, if I check my pacman logs, the time the kernel upgraded, corresponds the oom killing issues started.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[2021-07-10T06:13:22+0200] [ALPM] upgraded linux-raspberrypi4 (5.10.46-2 -> 5.10.48-1)')

OK. I haven't experienced this on aarch64. If you have a spare SD card, you might give it a try. I can't think of a single reason why you'd want to run armv7h these days. I guess some obscure software many not be available for aarch64.

I downgraded kernel yesterday and so far it seems fine...

@graysky im running armv7h... When I was installing it i didn't know there even was an 64bit option. Now im hesitant to move since im to lazy to install all the sonarrs and radarrs etc. I will take a look if there is an easy port but I doubt it exist...

No idea what sonarrs and radarrs are. Moving from armv7h to aarch64 requires you to start with a fresh image and copy back configs/data. No way to do it automatically to my knowledge.

IIRC Rpi kernel has pretty small min_free value. Try increasing it, to, say 100MB, and see if it helps

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'vm.min_free_kbytes = 102400')
