graysky testkernel for armv7 architecture?

Postby df8oe » Thu Oct 13, 2022 3:27 pm

I have running some rpi3b with aarch64 architecture and I am using there excellent test-kernels distributed by graysky. Now I wonder if there is a possibility to use the newest kernels for armv7, too...

I am not planning to provide armv7h for several reasons, although I am keeping the armv7h config up-to-date so you can build the kernel yourself: https://github.com/graysky2/PKGBUILDs/tree/rpi-6.0.y

1. Convenience
2. Quality

1. I am building aarch64 using aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc on my x86_64 box. It compiles in just a few minutes.
2. I test the builds on a RPi4 which is the only kernel there, so there is a bit of QC on it.

I do not have a corresponding armv7h toolchain, so to compile armv7h would require me to boot into armv7h and use distcc to compile which is much slower. Further, I don't run armv7h for much beyond test building things, so there would not be a QC test by me.

EDIT: why run armv7h at all? Is there something you cannot do in 64-bit?

Thanks for your explanations. So it is much easier for me to make a new installation on aarch64 architecture which has same packages installed as the armv7 installations. The armv7 installations are "grown" and based before my switchinbg to aarch64. Time to switch there :)

Any reason the armv7l version has not gotten updates in a week, or is it better to backup and reinstall my Pi4 with Hifiberry to the aarch64 version?

I am not building an armv7h version at all. I do not see a use case for running armv7h either. Use aarch64 and enjoy.

I updated the rpi-6.1.y kernel for armv7h so you can build it if you want from here: https://github.com/graysky2/PKGBUILDs/t ... /linux-rpi
