Actually, just speaking for myself, I don't think autofs would make much of a difference. Automount via fstab is working better than mounting my share at boot ever did. However, once I cd into the actual share mount point, the auto-unmount seems to stop working and the share stays "mounted"... except that it disappears just as it was doing when I was mounting it at boot. And yet it remains accessible via smbclient.
To me this means that there's a problem with the way cifs-utils manages the share. I don't know enough about the way the CIFS VFS interfaces with the Windows host, but logically the problem has to be there. I plan to start a new thread focusing on that problem.
