[Solved] EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p2): couldn't mount as ext3

Postby nickarchpi2 » Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:53 pm

I have searched for this issue and only found 1 post that was old and locked.

In my logs I have the following errors and wanted to know if anyone has found a solution.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Jun 04 01:01:33 alarmpi kernel: EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p2): couldn't mount as ext3 due to feature incompatibilities
Jun 04 01:01:33 alarmpi kernel: EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p2): couldn't mount as ext2 due to feature incompatibilities
Jun 04 01:01:42 alarmpi kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Asking for cache data failed
Jun 04 01:01:42 alarmpi kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through')

Is everything working fine? If it is then there is nothing wrong. Since a while ago ext4 driver in the kernel can be used for ext3 and ext2 filesyatems. Since by default root fiesystem is not specified in bootargs ext4 driver tries to mount it as ext2 and 3 first. Ext4 isn't exactly backwards compatible out of the box with earlier ext fs.
You could specify filesystem type on kernel cmdline or recompile kernel with dedicated ext2/3 drivers. Either should get rid of the messages with no other benefit and more hassle :)

I fully agree with moonman. I live with these warnings for a rather long time now but never had any issues with ext2/3 filesystems.

Yes everything is working fine and no other errors are in the log other than these.

Thanks for your help. :)
