Does this happens in all listed modes?
Did you tried to use arandr to test modes?

This happens to me if i'm using a vga adaptor with hdmi port on my Chromebook.

Until now, an ugly solution for me was cheating a bit with:
xrandr --output LVDS-1 --primary --mode 1366x768 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-1 --mode 1360x768 --pos 48x0 --rotate normal

This positions the HDMI output a little bit to the right, in order to sync the signal composition. Try messing with --pos values.

Hope it helps.
