SOLVED: rpi 3 B; phones-audio speaker-test OK espeak fails

Postby replabrobin » Sat Oct 10, 2020 6:55 pm

I recently updated a machine last updated in 2018/Dec. Prior to the output sound was ok for espeak and other apps eg speaker-test.
After the update all phonejack sound stopped. I don't use pulse audio. I had to add a .asoundrc that looks like this because the default became hdmi which I don't use.
.asoundrc
Code: Select all
pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
}

ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
}

aplay -l
Code: Select all
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: b1 [bcm2835 HDMI 1], device 0: bcm2835 HDMI 1 [bcm2835 HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 4/4
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
  Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
  Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
card 1: Headphones [bcm2835 Headphones], device 0: bcm2835 Headphones [bcm2835 Headphones]
  Subdevices: 4/4
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
  Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
  Subdevice #3: subdevice #3

speaker-test -c 2 works fine, but espeak fails; I am in the audio group if that makes any difference.

espeak error

I also tried removing /var/lib/alsa/asound.state adding /etc/alsa/state-daemon.conf as this is often recommended. Config.txt looks like this
Code: Select all
# See /boot/overlays/README for all available options

dtparam=audio=on
device_tree_param=audio=on
#dtoverlay=w1-gpio
gpu_mem=128
initramfs initramfs-linux.img followkernel
obviously something is off, but what? any assitance gratefully received.

EDIT: turns out I needed to change the /etc/asound.conf to add
Code: Select all
defaults.pcm.card 1
   defaults.ctl.card 1
