ODROID-XU - chroot for Galaxy tab pro 12.2

Postby technobuddha » Mon Jul 14, 2014 1:33 am

Hello all,
I have been looking to get a linux chroot into Android kitkat on the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2
I finally came here as there is a port of ArchLinux called ODROID-XU

the Samsung Tab Pro 12.2 has an "Exynos 5420 1.9 GHz octa-core", and the ODROID-XU is built upon it.
the only difference is that the graphics is an ARM Mali-T628MP6, and not the PowerVR SGX544MP3 GPU.

I saw a post here: "Installation in an Android Chroot" http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1361

SOOOO, it can be done!

Is anyone doing this, or can assist, or can point me in the right direction???

No, the distribution is Arch Linux ARM, and it is a port of Arch Linux to ARM hardware. ODROID-XU is an ARM development board on which ALARM works.

Also, the userland is no more bound to the specific SoC than x86 code is bound to Opteron processors.

Consider reading the documentation, and probably some tidbits on the wiki down the road, if you plan on living up to that username.

sarcasm?, how quaint.
But seriously, thank you for pointing out that information, and the info on the SoC. that's reasuring.
You clearly know your stuff, so can you give me some "google terms" that might help me on finding out the ArchLinux port info they use on that board? Not to sure where I can find the Documentation..yet.

Also, do you feel/know if I'm heading in the right direction on getting a chroot of archlinux on the android.

the theory I have is this:

since samsung is building android with the exynos, that I should have a chroot linux compiled for the exynos as well?

I want an xwindow system running alongside the android with touch screen capibilities.

Thanks for your interest!

For the choice of direction: yes, a chroot is your best option for an Android tablet. However you will need to be aware that you will not be able to use systemd natively inside a chroot from Android. You will need to handle starting services, etc, the old fashioned way.

You continue to miss the point. There is no "exynos" "odriod" port. Linux userland is not "ported" to a specific board. Support is addded to the kernel for the SoC, that is all the "porting" that is done in any sense.

Exynos is not a compile option for -mtune.

And get use to ""quaint sarcasm"" if you aren't going to bother looking for yourself.

I am used to it.
but i CAN have fun with it, right?
I assume you resonate that way,
and you seem smart via the info you've provided.
No Judgement, and I can appreciate inteligence.

and I've been googling since 9am lol

I read a bit of info: " then I configured the kernel to support exynos 5420 (use exynos_defconfig) and run make uImage to compile the kernel." sources: http://releases.linaro.org/14.05/compon ... table-lsk/

so I run a script at chroot for systemd and other daemons.

I'm trying to find a compiled kernel that i can use for a distro like archlinux.. right?
now we are back to my first post. where can I find that kernel! and info that's been used with archlinux...

and you can see i'm not a noob.
and I have lived up to the name many times over.
namaste!

You don't need a kernel in a chroot!

ahhhh ok, thanks for that info. but if i'm correct, I'll need the libraries, and other system deamons that are tied to the kernel, right?
