Is it ever safe to run pacman -Syu ?

Postby coolporygon » Thu Jul 16, 2015 4:44 am

I once ran the update everything command:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'sudo pacman -Syu')
and it borked everything. I had to do some voodoo and asking around on reddit to reverse it (I'm only intermediate with linux, but I'm awful with arm architecture).
If I'm running arch on a samsung chromebook, is it safe for me right now to update everything?

Yes, it is often safe to run -Syu .. however, you need to pay attention to what it is updating, not just blithely ignore the output.

Is there a way to opt out of certain packages getting updated? Is that even a smart idea?

yes, you can edit the pacman.conf and have it exclude certain packages.

Its recommended that you update regularly, however I'm of the mind - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Its not a rare occurrence that an update will "fix" something and then your system won't do what it did before the update without some manual intervention. You also have to check the archlinux.org front page. Occasionally there are manual interventions you need to follow, and those will usually be listed on that page.

I generally agree. I only opt to upgrade if there is a new security fix or feature, or if the thing is broken. The only reason I'm asking is because some things aren't working and are requiring manual intervention to fix (namely midori). I was just curious if running pacman -Syu would make all my problems go away (even though in the past it actually created more of them).

I find ArchLinux (and by design ALARM) surprisingly stable, given that its a neiche cutting edge distro.

As long as you "pacman -Syu" on a regular basis, it (in my experience) remains stable, there is only one occasion - due to an issue with the Odroid-C1 kernel, that I have had to reinstall (and for a shortwhile exclude the kernel from updates)

The "trick" is to understand what is installed on the install, and as WarheadsSE states actualy read the output of the update as it will have notes of if a package has been replaced/split/added optional packages etc. I also try to back up any important configuration files (having your /home on a seperate drive or partition will help as well).

Leaving a long time between updates can bork your system as easily and quickly as a bad update can .
