RPi3 crashes after a while with kernel 5.10.31+

Postby henkv » Wed Apr 28, 2021 5:20 pm

Hi,

Since the upgrade to linux-raspberrypi version 5.10.31 and now 5.10.32, my Raspberry Pi 3b crashes after a while. I do not have this problem with kernel 5.10.27. The system is used as an access point with freeradius and sometimes I start Kodi (and stop it after usage).
I do not see anything strange in the logs and the crashes seem to occur randomly, but mostly within a few hours.

The system is updated with the latest packages:
# pacman -Q | grep raspberry
firmware-raspberrypi 20210224-1
linux-raspberrypi 5.10.32-1
linux-raspberrypi-headers 5.10.32-1
raspberrypi-bootloader 20210427-1
raspberrypi-bootloader-x 20210427-1
raspberrypi-firmware 20210427-1

What does "crashes" mean? Hard lock/no ssh/no keyboard? What is displayed on monitor? Any debug info? Journalctl entries?

It's a hard lock, no ssh or keyboard possible and when I turn on the tv, it gives no signal.
Also, the journalctl entries give no information. How can I debug this?

That is annoying. Are you able to ssh into the box when it is up and leave a term connected? You can see the ring buffer live if you do this as root:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# cat /proc/kmsg')

Hopefully, you can capture whatever is hardlocking the device. That can be used to open a bug report against the kernel and move forward. For the record, I have several RPi4s that run 24/7 and have not experienced this. I no long use an RPi3B though so I cannot help.
