Which kernel for armv7 RPi

Postby keithspg » Sun Aug 23, 2020 11:07 pm

I am wondering what the intention is for the linux-raspberrypi package versus the linux-raspberrypi4 for the armv7 RPis. I have noted that the linux-raspberrypi4 package installs and boots on PiB2v1, PiB3, PiB3+ and PiB4. The linux-raspberrypi package will not boot a Pi4B. Is there a reason to not use the linux-raspberrypi4 kernel on lesser Pis? I ask this as I am working on an audio device which is for all Pis and have decided to use the RPi4 kernel for all of them I have not noticed any problems or issues related to its use on the Pi2 or Pi3. If there is not a reason to not use it on lesser Pis, why not get rid of the other version?

There was a time when pi4 required its own config or else the sd card would not init as I recall, so the packages diverged.

@graysky Thanks.

I would love for RaspberryPi for armv7 to go away in favor of aarch64. My thought is that they would not have to maintain 4, still just 3 and they could be the 3 that we will need/want going forward. linux-raspberrypi (armv6) will boot PiB, B+and Zero. linux-raspberrypi4 will boot Pi2-4. linux-raspberrypi64 will boot P2v1.2to Pi4. This is what I have configured for my audio system. 3 versions covers all RPIs.
