Secure wifi networks

Hi,
On my Raspberry pi 3 (AARCH64) I can only connect to non secure wifi networks.
wifi networks that have passwords (wpa2) don't associate and the connection times out.
I have been scouring the internet but have not found any lead. Has anyone encountered this issue? how might i diagnose/fix it?
