Pi4 shows armv7l after install armv8

Postby rafaelcastellar » Sat Sep 21, 2019 5:39 pm

Hi all!

I've just installed ALARM armv8 in my brand new Pi4 (https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv ... berry-pi-4), but when I tried uname -a, I've got 'armv7l'. Why is that? I wanted to have armv8 running.

Any tips?

Tks

It's because if you look at the image name you downloaded, it's armv7. The reason is because the arm64 kernel isn't really ready right now, just experimental since last week from the Raspbian

My image have no mention about the arch, just that is for pi4. Also, the link to the image pages says armv8. But it is ok...Thanks for that.

A dumb question: if I had armv7l version, would be there any way to update to armv8 when it is ready? Or would I have to install a new one?

Ah you're right, I thought it was mentioned in the filename at the beginning. I think the image/Wiki pages are just ordered what the chips are capable of, not what the image is.
aarm64 should be downwards compatible, so I switch should be possible, even though myself would prefer a new clean install.

I'm pretty sure you would want a clean install. Compiled binaries for armv7h are different from aarch64 and if you feel there are benefits from running a pure 64-bit environment, you would want all bins/libs etc. to be as such.

Same here, just fresh installed `ArchLinuxARM-rpi-4-latest.tar.gz` to realize it's like being in Raspberry 2 all over again :D

I have the following questions:

1. can I use ArchLinuxARM-rpi-3-latest.tar.gz instead, even if unstable? does it work?
2. shouldn't the wiki page mention it's old 32 bit image as it does (did?) with RPi3 ?
3. any ETA when the arm64 version would be ready?

Thanks in advance for any sort of extra detail

FWIW I've answered myself the first question: No, the arm64 image used for the Pi3 does not work at all on Pi4, as it gets stuck at the boot, so it's not forward compatible (as in, you cannot use the same Pi3 card into a Pi4).

However, the current version seems to work well, except it doesn't seem to be able to use the wifi: it connects, but it doesn't resolve any website/domain ... but that's another story.

Hopefully someone can still answer my other 2 questions.

Regards

Hi! I can answear the first question as you did... tried so, but got stuck at the boot...

I'm looking forward for the other two answers, especially the 3rd.
