aarch64 and dtbo files

Postby quark » Wed Aug 05, 2026 8:17 pm

I tried aarch64 kernel on my rpi4 and it still seems to not work with any dtbo files I drop in /boot. Almost 5 years later from a previous post:
make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_LOCAL, '
', 'https://archlinuxarm.org/forum', 'viewtopic.php?f=65&t=15720&p=68233&hilit=dtbo#p68233', ' class="postlink-local"')
While the OS runs fine in stock format, it's pretty much useless for custom applications where one has a shield. linux-rpi is on longterm, so at this point Raspbian seems more of a rolling release than Archlinux ARM is. You can get mainline:make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_FULL, ' ', 'https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/tree/rpi-7.2.y', '', ' class="postlink"')

Had a look at similar issues other users had here:make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_LOCAL, '
', 'https://archlinuxarm.org/forum', 'viewtopic.php?f=65&t=15345', ' class="postlink-local"')
Well? Is this a forum or just an echo-chamber!?
edit: website also seems broken. What a clusterf*ck. Hope Archlinux team does a proper implementation for ARM, soon.

Yeah, you're going to need to post some debug information if you expect anybody to help you. Last time I checked the mainline kernel boots and runs fine on a Pi 4.

The kernel runs fine, yes. But you cannot use shields that require dtbo files.

Completely forgot that I asked the very same question more than 4 years ago:make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_LOCAL, '
', 'https://archlinuxarm.org/forum', 'viewtopic.php?f=65&t=15720&p=68232#p68232', ' class="postlink-local"')
And nothing changed. Atm I moved to raspbian.

In my experience (similar problems with dtb on the beagle family) - the best approach is after understanding what needs to be done is first understand the problem, and come up with a solution. Then clone the armarch github. Then write the solution into a PKBUILD file. The clone should then be pushed back to armarch, get a third party (so someone not involved in the development) to test the PKGBUILD, and to comment that it works as required.

This was the only way I found of making a change in the armarch distribution, its a bit painful, sorry about that - but it is what it is ...

Oh yes - its also worth saying that the process for arm64 being accepted into the main arch linux, is also a slow process. Part of acceptance there is you need a very high percentage of packages compiled for your architecture. The current arm64 push I think has been running for 2 years - and still hasn't reached the level needed to be accepted. Until that happens even just posting on the arch linux forum about an architecture that isn't supported, will get you post removed!

Didn't even know what is wrong. I don't think I had any feedback in logs, It's like any dtbo files were simply ignored. The rpi4 install wiki said nothing of it, if they work or not. Lost a full day trying to make sense of it.
Simply as rpi4 with a running kernel yeah sure that's fine. If that's all you need then it works great, at least as far as I could tell.
