With the card mounted:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# journalctl -D /root/root/var/log/journal/HASH')

Where HASH is the unique-to-your-system hash

There is no hash there. Just an empty 'remote' directory.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
tree var/log/journal
var/log/journal
└── remote
')
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
ls -la var/log/journal
total 20
drwxr-sr-x+ 3 root systemd-journal 4096 Aug 10 02:54 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Aug 10 02:54 ..
drwxr-sr-x+ 2 root systemd-resolve 4096 Aug 10 02:54 remote
')

OK, you got problems. That means whatever is happening is before systemd gets involved.

Which tarball did you use?

The 'aarch64' image.

This is the 64bit one as I understand it.

Is there an archive of previous image releases?

Perhaps could try with the previous one to this version if possible?

I just took the latest tarball/followed the instructions to test on my 8G pi it booted successfully. Not sure what your problem is.... did you check the md5sum of the tarball? Bad uSD card? Did you do the sed step on the guide? That would not accord for the boot cycle you're describing but it would result in a failure to finish booting.

Hmm. OK. Well, it's helpful to know that the image is not at fault then. Thank you.

It must be something with my setup. I will have to try a few things. Different SD card, different power supply perhaps.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry. Forgot to reply to that.

No I didn't check the MD5 hash. I will check that.

Bad SD card. Won't rule it out but I don't think so. I was able to run Raspberry Pi OS on it the other day to update the firmware.

Yes, did the sed step from the guide.

Thinking it may be power supply related. Maybe. The Pi is brand new but it was board only. I've been powering it from an active USB3 hub that's connected to my computer. It powers the Pi fine with Raspberry Pi OS and I have always been able to power Pi's from it in the past. I have tried AC/USB adapter that I had in my drawer which is 5V 2A 10W which also didn't work. Same result on the screen. Not sure what the Pi requires PSU-wise (officially) off top of my head. Will need to check the specs.

Also, have one of these that I have tried without it being connected to my main computer.

https://plugable.com/products/usbc-hub7bc

Specs say provides 5V 1.5A 7.5W per port.

OK, checked the MD5 and also the signature. Both check out OK.

I have tried three different power supplies now. Two are active USB3 hubs and the other is a 200W GaN charger that I use for my laptop. All with the same result.

Using the very same SD card. I re-flashed Raspberry Pi OS onto it. The Pi boots into the OS as expected and works fine. And works on all three power supplies that I have tried.

Fairly confident that the SD card and power supplies are fine.

I then went through the steps again in the docs to install Arch. All steps were performed without any issues. I insert it into the Pi, I get that same message again, and then it restarts. Looping over and over.

I guess the only other things I can try now are an actual different SD card, just to rule that out. And perhaps find a more powerful standard AC/USB 5V power adapter to try.

This might be a dumb question, but it couldn't be because I am doing the Arch setup from within a virtual machine could it? I run Arch in VMware Fusion. The host machine is a Mac. When setting up Raspberry Pi OS, I do that using the Pi Imager software directly on the Mac. But to set up Arch I have to pass the SD card through as a USB device to my VMware virtual machine. Do you think that could be causing an issue?
