[core]/linux-aarch64 on ODROID-C2 ... good idea?

Postby graysky » Sat Oct 08, 2016 9:41 pm

Is anyone running [core]/linux-aarch64 on their ODROID-C2? I noticed that on 11-Sep-2016 the 3.14 branch has been EOL'ed by kernel upstream. I am using my ODROID a web-exposed server LAMP so my perception is that increased kernel security will be provided by the non-EOL'ed kernel.

I'm certainly hoping it will continue as to date, the archlinux distro has proved to be the best for us on our odroid-c2 clients...
even planning to put our servers on ArchLinux...

The only real issue so far happened this morning when it appears that the combination of a vesa config in boot.ini and an
HDMI->VGA adapter (we use the UGREEN active adapater) that the screen goes beserk, but setting it for now to 1080 lines
instead of vesa gets it readable again, though with banding... (Our monitors are HANNS-G 1680x1050 VGA)

No offense but your post isn't related to my question at all...

As I indicated, we are using Arch.. but had an expected issue with the latest update (odroid-c2 related).

The topic of this discussion is whether there will be a switch to mainline kernel. Please create a new thread about your specific issue.

Now back on topic. I don' know if support for C2 has been mainlined, if it is then you should be able to use mainline now or when the support is mainlined, most likely without the video acceleration.

Check out this site: http://linux-meson.com/doku.php

It looks like support for Amlogic S905 (meson-gxbb) has been mainlined since 4.6, and there's an initial device tree for the C2 since 4.7. However, proper 3D acceleration with the Mali-450 gpu is probably never going to work without binary blobs, unless someone decides to reverse-engineer a driver for it.

I don't know if the current alarm 4.8 kernel actually works with the C2 or not, but will try in a couple of weeks when mine arrives.

Update: I got a stream of resets with 4.9.rc2 (boot.ini is pointed at 'meson-gxbb-odroidc2.dtb').

I can say that 4.8.6 on my C2 lead to an unbootable system. It's headless though so I cannot debug.

With the new release of 4.9, the mainline kernel still does not fully support the C2. Two important drivers that are missing are USB and the SD card. 4.10 is looking like it may have usable support for the C2, but that is the earliest that mainline will support the C2.
