odroid-c2 kernel crash dumps

I asked this on the odroid forum and got no response so will try here for the cleverer/nicer people

I'm trying to set up latest archlinux arm on my new C2 which I chose as a replacement home server. I can get the board to boot and log in via ssh (I pre-configured an SD card with all necessary perms etc etc).

I want to run headless so have configured boot.ini with

setenv nographics "1"

I also changed the alternate console to ttyS1 to try and activate the gpio console.

On my main pc I have a usb to gpio lead on /dev/ttyUSB1 and have set up putty (and/or screen) to use this device. I have used this gpio usb serial lead with rpi and it seems to work perfectly.

On boot I see a lot of garbage appearing on the connected terminal or putty which lasts until I see a login prompt. I can login on this serial port and it seems mostly to work.

However, on login I do see some sort of crash dump which seems to originate somewhere in systemd land. I don't have access to this machine right now (at work), but I would like to know if there is any other experience of this behaviour from others.
