Thanks again!
I would love to be able to just install from a cd, but I haven't been able to get an iso to boot on qemu-aarch64.
I copied someone elses install with an external kernel (-kernel …). This is a pain!

Here is the solution: pacman -Syu, but do not reboot. scp the new kernel and initramfs to the host. Shutdown the guest. Copy the new kernel and initramfs into the guest machines directory, reboot, and Bob's your uncle.
