Linux-rpi instead linux-aarch64

Postby corrobor » Mon Feb 07, 2022 2:11 pm

Hi, pros and cons to switch from mainline kernel (Linux-aarch64) to Rpi foundation kernel (linux-rpi) on a Raspberry 4?
Thanks

Pros - HW accelerated video decoding
Pro/con depending on your PoV - RPi Foundation maintained fork

Other pro is that you can use btrfs pretty much out of the box.

I would say yes to that. I'm even against having mainline as the default for the Pi's :-)

Disclaimer: as a mainline kernel developer i'm biased

Cons of the Raspberry Pi foundation fork:
- no official support for U-Boot
- kernel tree is not really bisectable
- in case of kernel issues the kernel mailing lists wont help
- delayed security fixes

But i agree this wont convince most of the Raspberry Pi users.
