After kernel update to 5.15.61-1 USB boot not working

After updating the kernel my husband and I can no longer boot from USB. The hard drive is detected but neither of our Raspberry Pi 4's even get as far as the rainbow square. I tried updating the kernel on an SD card and that booted fine so I copied the boot partition from the SD card to the hard drive hoping maybe some files were corrupted but still can't boot USB. Any ideas? I'm using the linux-rpi kernel.

Not super useful to hear maybe, but USB Boot still works fine on my raspberry pi 3A.

got the same on rpi 4b - sd card boot works OK

I downgraded the kernel - same behaviour - so its something else I guess

I thought about switching to having the boot partition on an SD card then hand off to the hard drive but it's not really what I want to do long term. I feel like I would be wasting an SD card because the Pi 4 isn't supposed to require an SD card to boot from USB. I tried to figure out last night if there was a file missing or corrupted but I didn't have enough time. If anyone stumbles across something any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks gofree! I'll try that when I get home. Since it happened at the same time I updated the kernel I assumed it must be the kernel.

I can confirm that the problem Is not the kernel but bootloader

New bootloader Has been released. Has anyone tried if It fix the bug?

I tried the new bootloader but it's still not working. I had to revert back to the previous one again.
