RPi2 -> RPi3

since the 3 is using the arm7h pi2 image still... would it be possible to just put swap the sdcard for my rpi2, if it has the latest firmware, into the new rpi3?

Yes, for now.

If the RPi3 (ever) becomes ARMv8 capable, this will no longer be possible.

i'll probably clone the sdcard in case before I try it out, and will post how it goes

edit: will make sure to edit boot.txt for appropriate cpu settings

As long as your system is up to date (run pacman -Syu on the RPi2 first) you can just swap the device forth and back without any modification.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'I')f the RPi3 (ever) becomes ARMv8 capable, this will no longer be possible.

I believe it will still be possible after 64-bit software is ready, since the configuration is also on the SD card.

In other words, the file /boot/config.txt is what determines 32-bit vs. 64-bit mode, so as long as your RPi2 SD card doesn't enable 64-bit boot (which it wouldn't) then when that card is in the RPi3, it will continue booting in 32-bit mode.

Once there's a separate image for the RPi3 available the support for the combined one may be dropped and specific files removed. Thus an updated RPi2 system may not boot on a RPi3 anymore even in 32bit.

As andiling said. Once the userland for the Pi3 is 64-bit, the Pi3 image will not be usable on the Pi2, even if a pi2 might remain usable on a Pi3
