Chromebook R13 not booting from some USB media

Postby krovetz » Fri Nov 18, 2016 3:08 am

I got a Chromebook R13 and am having difficulty booting it from some external USB devices.

On two devices, after installation, using ctrl-u to tell the Chromebook to boot from USB results in a low tone and no boot:

- External OCZ SSD in an external Anker USB 3.0 case.
- Kingston USB 3.0 thumb drive.

But, when I set up a Patriot USB 2.0 thumb drive, everything went well.

Is anybody aware of what restrictions there are on the boot media?

From observation, it appears to not like USB3 :)

I tried with a USB 2.0 external SSD and it didn't work then either.

Looks like the best bet for a fast R13 Arch system is to get Arch installed on a USB 2.0 flash stick, boot into it, and then follow the directions again but onto /dev/mmcblk0 instead of /dev/sda. That's what I've done, and it runs quite snappily now.
