This is for ARMv8 based devices

@yossarian

Here's a good guide: https://jamesachambers.com/odroid-n2-petitboot-ssd-boot-guide/
BTW, I don't remember having to do the step he discusses where you edit the arguments. I've always used UUID in bootargs and that seems to do the trick.

Okay I did happen to run across that guide. It seems that that guide spells out how to do it with Ubuntu, and from what I can tell, uboot is still installed on the SSD in that case. I tried to do it without uboot, because the M1 doesn't need uboot and I assume it's not invoked by petitboot, but I might be wrong. I could try some experiments with Ubuntu and see what happens differently.

@yossarian, your post on Jun 18, 2023 5:29 pm responding to my post about 2GB vs 4GB is incorrect in that you misunderstand my situation. You stated that both your 2GB and 4GB boards work with the same software so that there is no difference. Here is why that is a wrong conclusion.

Early in boot a ram training occurs. In some older uboots that training is configured to happen once and in newer twice. My N2+ fails the first training but succeeds on the second training. So with the newer uboot I can boot. I got this newer uboot by downloading an odroid minimal ubuntu img and cleaving off the first 2048 512B blocks and then removing the first 512B block. With my older uboot from the arch install download, uboot was configured to try training once and so it failed to boot which led me to seek the newer uboot.

In your console trace you kindly provided I could see that you did this on your 4GB N2+, that the uboot was configured to try twice, and that your board succeeded on the FIRST try. Being configured to try twice, your 2GB version would also boot but that alone does not tell us if it failed on first training and then succeeded on second like mine now does. The only way to tell would be to repeat the console trace while booting the 2GB board and check the training. What I really would like to know is if the first training failure is specific to my board or common to 2GB boards. Given that the training config was changed from one try to two tries, there must have been a reason for that change which suggests the problem is more common than just my board.

Thanks.

You are correct that the use of partition labels is independent of the device tree blob (DTB) configuration.

Re: ODroid N2+ Support

Postby karog » Fri Jul 07, 2023 4:46 pm

Thanks yossarian for posting this. As you can see in the section I have copied below, your 2GB fails the first training just like mine but is configured to try twice and succeeds the second time. It is only two data points (yours and mine) but that gives me much more confidence that this is systematic.

Note the lines marked with *****************

And curses on the forum bolloxing the formatting still with problematic PHP.
