For one, you shouldn't be using gpu mem at all given recent changes upstream. See the package defaults for /boot/config.txt ... you can test if the module for the camera is loaded by grepping it out of lsmod for imx708. If it isn't try running modprobe imx708 and testing functionality. It could also be that there is a dtoverlay= settings for your camera. I do not know having never used one.

I have got the imx708 module loading, but I am still getting no camera detected.

I am a bit confused about some of the instructions on this page: https://archlinuxarm.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi

I realise that this is really aimed at the Pi 3.

If I put these options in my config, the pi won't boot.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'start_file=start_x.elf fixup_file=fixup_x.dat')

I can't help due to no experience with the camera. You might try posting on the rpi fourms.
