Migrate AArch64 System from RPI3B to RPI4

Postby df8oe » Mon Jan 01, 2024 5:04 pm

As title says: I want to migrate an existing AArch64 RPI3B installation (with vanilla kernel) to new hardware (RPI4). In my eyes complete software can be used as before, only firmware and kernel (?) must be changed. Is there already a tutorial what I must do for migration? Or any links to related topics?

Best regards and happy new year!

For any rpi I recommend using the linux-rpi kernel not linux-aarch64. That said, going from 3 to 4 should be as simply as a card swap.

Thanks for your reply! I am using linux-rpi kernel from your repo, but stuck at 6.5.6-1 because of sysfs remove aith next kernel release (wiringpi kicked off). So I can try booting from a cloned sdcard with the rpi3 system? That would be quite great!

Not sure what your sysfs comment is about... no need to clone it to test, just power off, swap, power on. Should boot just fine.

I will test and give feedback! Because it is used in a productive environment I will try with a cloned card (rsync backup every night) and do the real swap if it is succesful. Forget comment about sysfs - its my personal problem that I must solve here by myself by migrating 7 self programmed applications for house automation use from obsolete wiringpi to libgpiod (not as easy at all)...

I never had thought this, but the system is running on RPI3B and RPI4 same way flawlessly. That is impressive.
