Upgrading from RPI 4B to RPI 5B

Postby softwaredeveloper » Mon Feb 17, 2025 11:22 am

Hi,

I would like to transition my Arch Linux ARM running on Raspberry Pi 4B off an sdcard onto a Raspberry Pi 5.

I don't see any platform support on the Arch Linux ARM website so I'm feeling a bit lost here.

The thread at https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=16869 suggests that the aarch64 kernel doesn't work and neither does u-boot.

It seems all I need to do is install linux-rpi(-16k) and raspberrypi-bootloader.

However, I'm lost on how to convert my existing sdcard u-boot setup to switch to raspberrypi-bootloader. How would I go about doing this?

No conversion should be needed. You do not need the 16k kernel but it is supported. Recommend you install linux-rpi on the RPi4B and verify that it boots. You should be able to just swap the card into the 5B and be done. Using the 16k kernel if you want but know that if you put the card in a 4B it will not boot.
