Status of the project

Development on core packages and the distribution goes on in here.

Status of the project

Postby luna » Tue Aug 08, 2023 12:46 pm

Anyone who's been paying attention sees what's going on. The forums are broken, there are regularly periods of months where there are no package upgrades, packages are regularly broken without any fixes, and the developers / maintainers do not respond to any of it.

What's going on? I can understand a lack of time, a lack of motivation. I have a whole alphabet soup of mental health issues, so I understand, I promise. A little bit of communication would help a lot. Or, better yet, recruiting some users to help out would be even better. Everyone here is passionate about Arch, and has some level of expertise to be able to install and run this distribution given what's required. So presumably we can all help in our own ways, but without any contact from the maintainers there's nothing we can do but watch things continue to break.

We want to help, please let us! <3

I cannot speak officially for the project but I can point out a few things:

* The forums need an update but resources are limited and distro maintenance and development takes a priority.
* There are periods of time when major rebuilds (python, toolchain, etc.) require rebuilding many packages which requires freezing the current set of packages so the entire offering can be released in a synchronous fashion.
* Increased transparency for communication is an area where improvement can be made.

How can we help?
Regarding the toolchain, there haven't been a updated binutils/gcc/glibc for over a year now.

You acknowledge that transparency for communication is an area where improvements can be made. How about starting with the elements of your post? What distro maintenance and development tasks are underway? What major rebuilds are occurring, what's their status? What progress is being made to address the problems I raised in my OP?

Some people assume that you are the whole project, why can't you speak for it?

Don't make assumptions. I maintain several packages. Kevin IS ArchARM.

Assumptions come from lack of transparency. Onmake_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_FULL, ' ', 'https://archlinuxarm.org/', '', ' class="postlink"') there is no information if the project consists only of you, Kevin, or anyone else.

Who is interested in getting on a zoom to call to introduce themselves and chat over how we can all pitch in?
