How much free memory is to low?

Postby oellph » Sat Mar 12, 2011 9:44 am

I've got my v2 Pogoplug running on an 8Gb pen-drive with samba, cherokee, minidlna and firefly media server running. Used memory is 232mb and free is 14mb. Is that bad/good/indifferent? What are your experiences with how much you can run on Pogoplugs?

Edit: Ah wait, I think I'm reading it wrong, here's the results of "free -m":
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', ' total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 247 240 6 0 113 82
-/+ buffers/cache: 44 202
Swap: 0 0 0
')

Does that indicate that I actually have 202mb free and am using 44mb?

Linux caches things to RAM so its almost always full, but thats not a bad thing.
It doesnt matter if you have 0MB of ram or 200MB, becouse if an app needs some, cache or something unactive will be wiped and there will be ram for that app.
RAM is meant to be filled all the time, otherwise whats the point of having lots of free ram anyway ?

I am running boatloads of daemons on my Pogo V2 and never need swap. The pogov2 has a healthy amount of memory for Arch Linux ARM.

I would, however, be needing swap in some circumstances if I were to be trying to do the same thing with a Pogo Pro.

Thanks all. After initial disappointment with the Pogoplug, coming here and following all these guides I'm now really pleased, and confirmation that my ram is ok is good too :)
