[WORKAROUND] Entropy, or lack thereof

Postby technosf » Sat Mar 26, 2011 11:05 pm

Hi' y'all

I'm getting stuck using /dev/random blocking as there is little or no entropy available on a pogo pink.

I guess I could run a process to create some variety to spice this up, but I'd like to hear any thoughts y'all have on how to just have more entropy straight out the gate.

This is on 2.6.37, 4096 pool size, zero entropy available.

Thanks!

What are you using this for, and could /dev/urandom substitute?

I'm using /dev/random for an art project ;)

I could use /dev/urandom, but it's not very random - good for seeding, but that's it I guess. The issue is that there's just not a lot going on with the 'plug: No keyboard, no sound card, no wifi...

I might look into this http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=14589...

Yup, rng-tools provides some randomness, feeding urandom back into it. It compiles up fine, and I kicked it off with:

rngd -n 1 -r /dev/urandom

I have no idea what the quality of the output, but it'll have to do!

Thanks!
