I pulled down the new binutils and libmariadbclient packages. Upon restarting kodi-rbp, it did not produce errors but these new packages with kodi + an external mysqld causes playback errors including: video content not starting, video content starting but only audio being displayed (no video), and video content starting but not playing at all, just running in a fast forward state (the counter advances but nothing is displayed audio or video).

Downgrading the two packages and restating kodi fixes the problem entirely:
binutils (2.26-3 -> 2.26-2)
libmariadbclient (10.1.12-3 -> 10.1.11-1)

Journalctl output:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'journalctl -u kodi
...
systemd[1]: Started Starts an instance of Kodi.
kodi-standalone[1400]: sh: lsb_release: command not found

')

When I attempted playback of some content the kodi log reveled many errors like this:

I think there are already several posts in this forum about this.

My searchfu must be terrible. Can you point me to one you feel is relevant? I can't get over the fact that it just started happening upon the recent update and that it is reversible by downgrading.

EDIT: I am allocating 128M of memory to the GPU (have been since I setup the box) if you think that is the problem...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '% sed '/^#/d' /boot/config.txt
gpu_mem=128')

EDIT: I bumped it up to 256M and the problem seems to have gone away. Odd that it was triggered by this update. Thank you again and thank you to the development team. Arch ARM is the best distro for these devices thanks to your collective efforts :D
