[RESOLVED] Cutting on the number of ttys?

Postby Frex » Sun Apr 03, 2011 3:12 pm

Hello, I'm a new DockStar owner who's been running Arch Linux ARM from day 1, I'm very pleased with the results so far. I have noticed /etc/inittab is set up to spawn 6 ttys, but the memory on the DockStar being a bit constrained, and considering there are no physical console on an embedded other than serial, I thought: what would happen if I were to disable them?

E.g. like this

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# -8 options fixes umlauts problem on login
s0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 115200 ttyS0 linux
#c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty1 linux
#c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty2 linux
#c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty3 linux
#c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty4 linux
#c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty5 linux
#c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty6 linux
')

That's not an entirely bad idea. It's not going to free up very much ram, but you have a good point. I don't see any reason to create them. Unless someone else has a reason why they should stay, I'll get that adjusted in the packages.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mikestaszel', 'C')ut down to 2 ttys.

Why not 1 ? (I have yet to make the change on my system because I wasn't 100% sure it's safe)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('kmihelich', 'T')hat's not an entirely bad idea.

Thanks, that's an old trick that was (widely?) used when computers used to have way less RAM than the Dockstar, defaulting to 6 ttys is something that goes a long way back (I wonder exactly how long)

It won't probably make any difference in the long run since I suppose all the gettys were swapped out under a decent amount of memory pressure; still if they don't serve any purpose... :)
