Samsung Chromebook 2 XE503C12 Can't Boot from USB

Postby paddydetox » Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:30 pm

Good afternoon everyone. Attempting to load Arch onto the chromebook but have gotten hung up at step 13/14. I sync'ed after `umount root`, then rebooted, but when I press ctrl+U it tries to boot from USB but then goes back to attempting to load chrome in developer mode.

Does anyone have any ideas on alternative next steps? Should I just keep cycling through until something different happens?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I ran through the steps one more time this time recording video and taking photos with my phone. A couple of things:

1. At step 7 I received the error "partx: /dev/sda: error adding partitions 1-2 (I have a photo of the output from cgpt show /dev/sda)

2. The tar unpack gets hung for about 6 minutes and then outputs:
tar: Ignoring unknown extended header keyword 'LIBARCHIVE.xattr.security.capability'
tar: Ignoring unknown extended header keyword 'LIBARCHIVE.xattr.security.capability'

3 Step 11 outputs all files recorded and copied, 8.5 MB, 8.1 MiB, or 8466432 bytes.

4. After that I type umount root and press enter, then I type reboot and press enter. When the chromebook boots back up it will not allow me to boot into USB mode. It attempts to load something from the USB stick as I see the light flickering on the thumb drive, but nothing loads. It then goes back to the developer screen.

5. The entire process takes roughly ten minutes as I have a video beginning when I issue the command to unpack the tar file.

Good morning everyone!

Another attempt today, this time with a 128 GiB micro-SD card. I do not get the same error at step 7 as I did with the USB stick, but I do get hung up at step 9 now. The output of mkfs.ext4 /dev/mmcblklp2 is:
mke2fs 1.44.1 (24-Mar-2018)
The file /dev/mmcblklp2 does not exist and no size was specified.

But the output of cgpt show /dev/mmcblk1 shows:

0 1 PMBR
1 1 Pri GPT header
2 32 Pri GPT table
8192 32768 1 Label: "Kernel"
Type: ChromeOS Kernel
249737183 32 Sec GPT Table
249737215 1 Sec GPT header

Any info would be awesome!

Hello there

I had the exact same issue, and I run steps 8-9 multiple times until it worked out.

256mb SD Card here.

My problem is that I ended having a couple of installations, and (I'm a newbie) I don't know how to identify which one I'm using and how to free up (format) the unnecessary partition.

Good luck with that

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('paddydetox', 'T')he file /dev/mmcblklp2 does not exist and no size was specified.

must be /dev/mmcblk1p2
i.e. slot 1 partition 2
