eSATA to USB3 adapter

Postby Socaltom » Wed Jul 01, 2015 4:43 am

I'm probably the last to know, but there are adapters for hooking estata drives to USB3 ports. I picked on up on amazon.
I picked up this one for 10$
Optimal Shop USB 3.0 2.0 to eSATA External Bridge Adapter Converter 5Gbps for Latop

The good news
It works! I'm currently backing up to an eSATA drive ( ntfs) at about 16MB/s using rsync on my linux box. I tested it on my win 7 machine and got about 70MB/s ( it peaked above that).

The bad news
I have two esata docking stations. Neither will work with this, including the thermaltake unit that boots my V3 pogoplug direct from sata.

Tom
Edit,corrected for average NTFS transfer rate

Speeds: NTFS is crap on Linux, always has been.

Functionality: this comes down to some devices not liking multiplexers, and some being more finicky about what controller spec they will work with.

Sucky.

I'm getting the same speed through the adapter to NTFS as I am going from ext4 to ext4 on the internal drives, using rsync. So no samba involvement.

Tom

Oops--- looks like I miss spelled when I mounted the drive, so the 36Mb/s was to the ext3 roots drive, not the external drive. So I corrected the speed . so its not any faster then usb2 in this configuration, I will retest once I get done shuffling some drives.

Does lsusb show the device on the running at USB3 speeds?

I've been able to get some thermaltake docking stations with two slots to work on some controllers by only using a single drive in the second slot.

Yup, that is exactly what I am talking about with multiplex behaviors

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'D')oes lsusb show the device on the running at USB3 speeds?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@PogoServerV5 /]# lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 051d:0002 American Power Conversion Uninterruptible Power Supply
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 001 Device 014: ID 152d:0567 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JMS567 SATA 6.0Gb/s bridge
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
')

hmm, that's interesting. I reinstalled it and now this

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@PogoServerV5 /]# lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 051d:0002 American Power Conversion Uninterruptible Power Supply
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub')

now testing with dd
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@PogoServerV5 Backups]# dd if=/dev/zero of=./bigfile bs=1M count=1024 oflag=direct
1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 11.8506 s, 90.6 MB/s')

and with rsync
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
[root@PogoServerV5 Grownup Movies]# rsync -axv Test.mpg /Backups/
sending incremental file list
Test.mpg
sent 1,871,918,423 bytes received 35 bytes 19,601,240.40 bytes/sec
total size is 1,871,461,424 speedup is 1.00
')
